The head of the Iraqi Atomic Energy Commission and Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Dr. Naim Al-Aboudi, affirmed Iraq’s right to the peaceful use of nuclear energy and its employment in the educational, developmental and health fields.

This came in a joint press conference with the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Mr. Rafael Mariano Grossi, where the head of the Iraqi Atomic Energy Commission, Dr. Naim Al-Aboudi, explained that joint work with the International Agency to establish an Iraqi nuclear reactor for peaceful purposes will contribute to providing scientific and technical treatments in the field of cancer diseases, combating desertification, facing the climate change crisis and water treatment.

He added that Iraq has qualified scientists to restore its role and its right to the peaceful use of nuclear energy, pointing out that the past two weeks have witnessed a visit by the IAEA team to Iraq, culminating in the visit of the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency to Baghdad in order to resume cooperation between the IAEA and the Iraqi Atomic Energy Commission, appreciating the support of the International Agency in establishing a zero nuclear reactor for educational purposes and training students and researchers.

For his part, the Director of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Mr. Rafael Mariano Grossi, announced during the press conference the start of a new cooperation from the International Atomic Energy Agency with Iraq based on the peaceful use of nuclear energy, stressing the presence of a team from the International Atomic Energy Agency in Baghdad to work to achieve a peaceful nuclear energy program that takes into account international standards, similar to a number of countries in the region.

He revealed the intention of an Iraqi team from different disciplines to visit the headquarters of the International Agency in Vienna to formulate a roadmap for the Iraqi peaceful program, expressing at the same time his happiness with the launch of the initiative (Rays of Hope), which aims to develop and train medical staff and Iraqi students in a number of specialties in order to build the necessary capabilities in nuclear use in the medical and health aspects, noting that a team from the Agency visited Iraqi medical and health institutions specialized in radiotherapy and was briefed on their needs in the therapeutic aspects. , educational and research.
