Fifth stage students in the College of Veterinary Medicine succeed in undergoing surgery

Within the framework of the activities of the consulting clinic of the Animal Field Unit and in cooperation with the Veterinary Surgery and Obstetrics Branch, a team of professors of the branch and students of the fifth stage performed a successful surgery to open an abscess in the upper jaw of a calf. This operation is part of the ongoing efforts to develop students’ skills in dealing with animal emergency surgical cases.

The professors supervising the surgery, teacher Haider Mohammed Mohsen and assistant professor Falah Mahmoud Hameed, explained that the calf was suffering from swelling and severe pain in the upper jaw area, which negatively affected its ability to eat.

After clinical examination and accurate diagnosis, it was decided to perform surgery to drain the abscess. The operation included opening the abscess, draining the collected pus, and cleaning the area with sterile solutions to ensure that secondary infections did not occur. The calf was also provided with antibiotics and painkillers to ensure its speedy recovery.

The Dean of the Faculty, Assistant Professor Dr. Muhammad Asaad Al-Kaabi, stressed that such practical exercises enhance students’ abilities to deal with realistic surgical cases, which contributes to qualifying them for the labor market within the fields of veterinary medicine. He also pointed out that the college will continue to support these activities because of their positive impact on the educational process of the college students.
