Under the supervision of Assistant Professor Dr. Muhammad Asaad Al-Kaabi, Dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Karbala, the Human Rights Unit, in cooperation with the Women’s Affairs Unit, organized an awareness seminar entitled (Human Rights are a Fundamental Pillar for Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals), in which Assistant Professor Dr. Murtaja Abdul-Jabbar Mustafa and teacher Dr. Abbas Salman Muhammad Ali lectured.
The seminar aimed to highlight the pivotal role of human rights in achieving sustainable development in all its economic, social and environmental dimensions and the need to respect the basic rights of individuals such as the rights to education, health and decent work as prerequisites for building advanced and sustainable societies.
The seminar dealt with a number of important themes, most notably the eradication of poverty as a step towards achieving social justice, achieving gender equality, enhancing the role of women in development and protecting the environment as an essential element in sustainability, in addition to promoting a culture of human rights as a necessity to achieve comprehensive and sustainable development.
Within the framework of enhancing community awareness, awareness brochures were distributed that include basic information about human rights and ways for individuals to contribute to achieving development goals.
