The College of Veterinary Medicine produces sesame oil experimentally in a scientific project that supports the local economy

Under the supervision of the Dean of the College, Assistant Professor Dr. Mohammed Asad Saleh Al-Kaabi, the College of Veterinary Medicine at Karbala University witnessed the launch of the first stages of experimental production of sesame oil within an applied scientific project adopted by the Public Health Branch in the college, in cooperation with the General Veterinary Hospital in the holy province of Karbala, and with the support of the Iraqi Industrial Advisory Council.

This project is one of the most prominent scientific outputs that the college’s outputs committee seeks to transform from theoretical research into practical applications that enhance the economic and social value of scientific research and open new horizons for university investment in the production of natural oils with health benefits.

In this context, Assistant Professor Dr. Mohammed Asad Al-Kaabi, Dean of the College and Chairman of the Scientific Outputs Committee, explained that “the project embodies the college’s orientation to link scientific research outputs to the needs of the market and society, and constitutes a real start towards larger projects in the production of vegetable oils and products with medicinal and nutritional value.”

The experimental extraction of sesame oil was carried out using local seeds, according to strict safety and quality standards, in a first step towards transforming the product into a marketable commodity in the future, in cooperation with supporting parties from inside and outside the university.

The committee emphasized that this project is part of its work plan for the academic year 2024-2025, which aims to promote innovation and encourage professors and students to transform their research ideas into real products that contribute to serving the local community and developing the food industry sector.
