The head of the Iraqi Atomic Energy Commission and Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Dr. Naim al-Aboudi, announced that three sites within the Tuwaitha complex southeast of the capital Baghdad are free of any radioactive contamination.
During a press conference, Dr. Aboudi explained that the sites are the French Lama Laboratories, the Italian Radioisotope Production Facility and the Tammuz 2 nuclear research reactor, stressing that these sites have undergone comprehensive radiation surveys according to accurate scientific methodologies and a national partnership with relevant institutions, all the results of which proved that the sites are free of any radioactive residues that may pose a threat to public health.
In a related context, the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research announced the imminent signing of an agreement with the Chinese Atomic Energy Corporation on laying the foundation stone for the first subcritical training reactor in Iraq, noting that it is an educational project aimed at developing the skills of students and researchers in the fields of nuclear physics and peaceful radiological techniques.
