The College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Kerbala discussed a master’s thesis entitled “An Epidemiological and Diagnostic Study to Investigate Blood Parasites Affecting Buffalo Bred in Several Areas of Karbala City,” submitted by researcher Redha Ali Abdul Aoun to the Department of Internal and Preventive Veterinary Medicine.
The study aimed to determine the prevalence of the parasites Theileria annulata and Babesia bigemina among buffalo herds in four areas of Karbala Governorate, as well as to investigate the impact of age, sex, months, and region on infection rates. The study also addressed the most prominent clinical signs associated with infection and compared the blood profiles of infected animals with those of healthy animals.
The study also included confirming the parasite diagnosis using PCR technology, along with analyzing and sequencing the genetic material of the isolates, and then registering them in the GenBank database. This enhances the epidemiological and molecular knowledge related to blood parasites affecting buffalo.
The discussion committee consisted of Dr. Muhammad Asaad Saleh as chairman, Dr. Azhar Ali Faraj as a member, Dr. Ali Hussein Fadel as a member, Dr. Ihab Ghazi Mahdi as a member and supervisor, and Dr. Ihsan Muhammad Salbi as a member and supervisor.
