The College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Kerbala discussed a Master’s thesis entitled “Isolation and Identification of Proteus spp. Bacteria from Hatcheries and Hatching Eggs in the Holy City of Kerbala, and Evaluation of the Effectiveness of Commercial Disinfectants and Plant Extracts in Reducing its Growth,” submitted by researcher Nadia Fadhil Badri from the Public Health Department.
The study aimed to determine the prevalence of the bacteria in hatcheries and hatching eggs, compare the effectiveness of commercial disinfectants and plant extracts in reducing bacterial contamination, and explore the possibility of using natural extracts as adjuncts to disinfectants used in hatcheries.
The examining committee consisted of Assistant Professor Dr. Mohammed Asaad Al-Kaabi as chair, and members Professor Dr. Haifa Jumaa Hassan and Assistant Professor Dr. Hassoun Nadhim Hassoun, under the supervision of Professor Dr. Yasser Jamal Jamil and Professor Dr. Haider Ali Mohammed.
The study recommended strengthening microbiological surveillance and implementing cleaning, disinfection, and biosecurity programs in hatcheries, as well as conducting further research on plant extracts and their effectiveness against pathogenic bacteria.
