The College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Kerbala discussed a master’s thesis submitted by researcher Al-Baraa Adel Hammoudi (Department of Physiology, Biochemistry, and Pharmacology). The thesis was titled “Evaluation of a Promising Biomarker for the Early Diagnosis of Renal Failure and Its Relationship to Induced Nephron Damage in Male Rats.”
The study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of modern renal biomarkers—specifically Nephrin, Podocin, KIM-1, and NGAL—and compare them with traditional markers regarding the early detection of kidney injury and the localization of damage within the nephron.
The results demonstrated the superiority of modern biomarkers in the early detection of renal injury; Nephrin and KIM-1 exhibited the highest diagnostic efficacy. Meanwhile, histological examinations confirmed the presence of graded glomerular and tubular damage consistent with the biochemical findings.
The examination committee consisted of Prof. Dr. Saba Ibrahim Saleh (Chair), Prof. Dr. Alaa Hussein Mahdi, Prof. Dr. Zahraa Hussein Kadhim, Prof. Dr. Ayed Hamid Hussein (Member and Supervisor), and Prof. Dr. Rana Fadhil Mousa (Member and Supervisor).
